But Is It Really Possible to Screenshot Netflix?

If you’ve tried to take screenshots on Netflix, you’ve noticed that it doesn’t allow you to do so. Whenever you try to capture a screenshot of a movie or show, you get a blank screen or a Couldn’t Capture Screenshot prompt message. You may have tried traditional ways to take the screenshots like using print screen, snip and the windows+g application. But sadly, none of that works here.

The good news is that there are some ways to screenshot in Netflix without a blank screen, which I have explained later in the article.

But first let’s understand …

Why do Netflix or amazon prime video show black screen when you try to screenshot?

You may be wondering why is screen black on Netflix, amazon prime, Disney plus or any other such streaming platform when you try to screenshot, or screen record it? The answer to this is because they don’t want their users to share the content to other platforms.

Making the screen black while taking the screenshot is done for the goal is to make it difficult to pirate movies and shows for users. Netflix’s official usage policy states that you must get their permission before showing any screenshots of their content.

There are two ways you can take a screenshot or record the screen in Netflix or amazon prime video without getting the black screen, let’s see them one by one.

Take screenshot by Turning off Hardware Acceleration

If you are using chrome or edge for streaming Netflix or amazon prime, then you can easily take the screenshot by turning off your browser’s hardware acceleration.

In every browser, hardware acceleration is enabled by default. Hardware acceleration in browsers helps videos load more quickly on the computer, increasing its overall performance.

If you are looking to capture a screenshot of the contents of Netflix or amazon prime video, then you will need to turn off the feature and use any screenshot tool.

Let’s see

How to turn Off Hardware Acceleration in chrome:

First click here to go to settings > system or type the url below in your chrome browser and hit enter

chrome://settings/system

Use hardware acceleration when available in chrome

Now search for Use hardware acceleration when available from menus.

disable in chrome Use hardware acceleration when available

By default, it will be on, toggle the switch to disable hardware acceleration.

After that click on Relaunch.

After this you should be able to take a screenshot or record screen in Netflix or amazon prime with any black screen issue. Now to take the screenshot you use any tool like windows snipping tool or windows Game bar.

You can take a screenshot with the Windows snipping tool by pressing the Windows key + shift + s.

In Edge browser, you can disable hardware acceleration by following these steps

How to turn Off Hardware Acceleration in edge:

First click here to go to settings > system or type the URL below in your edge browser and hit enter

edge://settings/system

disable in edge Use hardware acceleration when available

Now search for Use hardware acceleration when available from menus and toggle to disable it. After that click on Restart.

And you should be able to take a screenshot in the edge browser as well.

Take screenshot by using a Sandboxed application

It requires a third-party program called sandboxie-classic, which creates a separate environment for each application.

Sandbox applications run any program a user prefers in an isolated environment and restrict their interaction with external sources and other software. Modifications made to the application inside the Sandbox will be secure and will not impact the application’s overall performance.  Which is perfect to take a screenshot without any restriction.

Let’s see how to use Sandboxie-classic to take screenshots in windows without any black screen problem.

First download sandboxie-classic from here.

Start the Sandboxie-classic application, then select Sandbox.

sandboxie classic run a web browser installation

Navigate to Sandbox > Default Box > Run Sandboxed > Run Web Browser.

The default browser will be opened within the sandbox. You can confirm this by looking at the yellow border around the browser. Start by moving the cursor over the edges of the screen to see if you can’t find the yellow border.

Now you can easily take a screenshot or record screen using any of your favourite screen tools.
